How dark the background of the stone is. Darker bodies make colour appear brighter and are rarer.
The intensity of the fire, judged in daylight. This matters more than any single colour.
Harlequin, rolling flash, pinfire. Named patterns command a premium, but buy what you love.
Solid opal is one natural stone. Doublets and triplets are layered and worth considerably less.
A well-cut stone shows its colour face-up with no dead spots, and sits properly in a setting.
CARE & CLEANING
Solid Australian opal is more robust than people fear, but it isn't a diamond. Treat it like the natural thing it is and it will outlive all of us.
Send any piece of ours back to the workshop once a year and we'll check the settings, repolish and re-rhodium where needed. You pay postage one way, we cover the rest.
