GUIDES

HOW TO BUY AN OPAL WELL

Five things that decide an opal's value, in the order we'd look at them ourselves. Read this and you'll buy better anywhere, not just from us.

01
BODY TONE

How dark the background of the stone is. Darker bodies make colour appear brighter and are rarer.

02
BRIGHTNESS

The intensity of the fire, judged in daylight. This matters more than any single colour.

03
PATTERN

Harlequin, rolling flash, pinfire. Named patterns command a premium, but buy what you love.

04
SOLID OR NOT

Solid opal is one natural stone. Doublets and triplets are layered and worth considerably less.

05
CUT & FINISH

A well-cut stone shows its colour face-up with no dead spots, and sits properly in a setting.

CARE & CLEANING

LOOKING AFTER YOUR OPAL

Solid Australian opal is more robust than people fear, but it isn't a diamond. Treat it like the natural thing it is and it will outlive all of us.

  • Wash in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush
  • Store separately in a soft pouch, away from harder stones
  • Wear it often, opal likes being worn
  • Send it to us once a year for a free check and clean
  • Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner
  • Avoid bleach, chlorinated pools and harsh household cleaners
  • Take it off for gardening, gym and heavy work
  • Don't leave it in direct sun or extreme dry heat for long periods

Free lifetime check & clean

Send any piece of ours back to the workshop once a year and we'll check the settings, repolish and re-rhodium where needed. You pay postage one way, we cover the rest.
